In the 1920s, the company's elegant suitcases become the choice of sophisticated globetrotters. Richard Morszeck, the company founder’s son, launches the first aluminium trunk on the market in 1937. This is only the first of many brilliant innovative ideas that have made RIMOWA a global success. The brand name 'RIMOWA' derives from Richard Morszeck (Richard Morszeck Warenzeichen).
The original luggage with the grooves.
The first aluminium suitcase with grooves is produced in 1950. The parallel-grooved aluminium structure marks the difference. It lends our luggage the characteristic design that makes all RIMOWA products distinctive and unique to this day. The luggage for the international jet set.
In 1976, Dieter Morszeck makes a landmark development: the first waterproof light-weight metal case. The RIMOWA waterproof system effectively protects the sensitive equipment of film and television crews, photographers and reporters from water, humidity, tropical heat or arctic cold. (Available through trade outlets.)
Handmade meets High-tech
In 2000, Dieter Morszeck's motto, 'Handmade meets High-Tech', leads to the first use of polycarbonate in luggage production and revolutionises the industry. Familiar from aircraft and vehicle construction, this material is not only particularly durable and impact-resistant but is also characterised by very light weight. This makes travel a considerably lighter affair.
2001 Premiere of the patented, ball bearing-mounted Multiwheel system. With it, even heavy cases can be turned and rotated effortlessly in any direction.
In 2006, RIMOWA luggage is fitted with innovative TSA-approved locks that are accepted worldwide. During security checks, these locks can be opened and closed again without damage.
Expanding the product range
In 2008, RIMOWA expands the product range once again. The SALSA DELUXE series is now available in new colours and is joined by the luxurious new TOPAS TITANIUM collection. A dozen different luggage collections in a variety of colours now wait to be tested under the toughest conditions around the world.
2009 Premiere of another innovation: the lightweight SALSA AIR polycarbonate series. The lightest SALSA of all time is impressive for its minimum weight, maximum stability and avantgarde design along with the latest in security technology.
Success to be proud of
2010 RIMOWA celebrates a success story in two chapters: the 60-year anniversary of "The aluminium suitcase with the grooves", and the 10-year anniversary of polycarbonate suitcases. International awards confirm the RIMOWA principle of quality: In the US, Travel + Leisure bestows its "Best Luggage" award upon the SALSA DELUXE. The Travel Goods Association awards first prize to the SALSA AIR.
Salsa Air Ultralight
2011 The SALSA AIR series is complemented by the ULTRALIGHT variant, the lightest RIMOWA Cabin Multiwheel® of all time.
