INSPO BEHIND THE COLLAB: RIMOWA X MONCLER
Experiments at the forefront of tech-enabled travel were the impetus behind “Reflection,” a new collaboration by RIMOWA and luxury apparel brand Moncler. Named for its mirrored aluminium surface, the conceptual new luggage design is also a reflection on the state of personal communications and the social media messages that populate our digital domains.
A bold new take on the RIMOWA Original, “Reflection” is an eye-catching polished aluminium suitcase offset by matte black handles, frame, locks and reinforced riveted corners. Embedded in the exterior is a removable LED screen that displays ticker-style messages in block red lettering — a stylistic nod to displays found in transport hubs the world over, and the social media text blasts that have come to form the basis of our everyday communications.
Identifying the tendency for people to broadcast their innermost thoughts online, “Reflection” instead translates this digital experience into the physical world with hyper-personalised luggage that can express its owners every mood. Through the purpose-built “Reflection” app, travellers can update and customise the text displayed on the luggage’s programmable LED screen.
Debuting at the third edition of Moncler Genius in Milan this February, the concept marks Moncler’s first foray into the realm of experience as part of the anticipated showcase. RIMOWA is one of the first travel brands to be featured as part of Moncler Genius platform, joining leading fashion figures like JW Anderson, Simone Rocha and Matthew Williams of 1017 ALYX 9SM. The “Reflection” installation sees the luggage pieces suspended from on a scaffolded arch illuminated with LED lights. Displayed on each suitcase’s screen are a rotating selection of travel phrases that recall both RIMOWA and Moncler’s origins and pioneering spirit.
While the LED-equipped luggage may only be a Moncler Genius concept for now, a travel-ready “Reflection” collection will soon be made available at RIMOWA retail stores worldwide. Featuring the same mirrored surface and embedded metal Moncler badge, the limited-edition collaboration combines the best of each brand’s technically advanced materials.
Inside each suitcase is an exclusive silver packing cube set in Moncler’s signature padded nylon fabric while a neon yellow luggage tag and belt adds distinctive utilitarian accents to the range. A custom sticker set commemorating the collaboration is also available as yet another means of personalising each RIMOWA.
Luggage for RIMOWA has long been an expressive medium; one that can be emblazoned and adorned with individual markers of journeys undertaken. With “Reflection,” RIMOWA and Moncler offer an updated way to express oneself through connected travel pieces that harness the power of technology and its communicative potential.
