With a mission to empower the next generation of purposeful travellers, RIMOWA makes strides towards supporting Chicago’s underserved youth with a new charitable luggage collection in partnership with online marketplace StockX and RSVP Gallery.
Chicago-affiliated designers, artists, and entrepreneurs Don C, Vic Mensa, Melody Ehsani, Angelo Baque, Easy Otabor, Chris Gibbs and Hebru Brantley were invited to customise their own one-of-a-kind suitcase using the recently launched customisation service, RIMOWA UNIQUE. Each creative added their personal flair to a RIMOWA Classic suitcase in the form of vibrantly coloured wheels, handmade leather handles and bold sticker graphics. The result is a series of collectible luggage pieces in step with Chicago’s pioneering streetwear scene.
In addition to creating their own RIMOWA UNIQUE, RIMOWA sought to inspire future creative leaders by inviting the collaborators to pack their suitcase with meaningful items that have helped each of them up their game. With items ranging from a travel-friendly neck pillow and a Marlon James book selected by Chris Gibbs, to a journal and Malcolm-X autobiography in Vic Mensa’s customised RIMOWA case. Angelo Baque’s case features a Ta-Nehisi Coates volume along with a Louis Vuitton amenity kit while Easy Otabor opted for a contemporary art retrospective accompanied by Beats Solo Pro Headphones. Other inclusions counted sketchbooks and artist pencil sets; every handpicked purposeful travel item inspired by each individual's personal journey.
Available to win exclusively through a charitable donation on StockX, the one-off luggage pieces will go to benefit Chicago-based non-profit Common Ground Foundation, an organisation that puts high school students from under-served communities on the path to become future leaders. Their much-needed work opens opportunities for inner-city youth to progress in the realms of creative expression and character development.
RIMOWA x StockX custom collaborative cases will be on display at RSVP Gallery in Chicago during the brand's exhibition showcasing the city's global impact on culture and sport, 'To the Game, Love Chicago,' from February 14–16, 2020.
